Description: By 2010, Public Works Agencies Are Facing the Retirement of 35-40% of Their Workforce. Who Is Going To Replace Them?

Nobody. As it presently stands, public works agencies simply can not compete with the private sector when it comes to attracting young, career-minded professionals. This is one of the most significant crises facing the public works profession!

To reverse this downward spiral, we need to forge new thinking for these tough questions:

• How will we retain the “organizational memory,” skills, and valuable community relationships that will be lost in the boomer exodus?

• How can we ‘grow our own’ new leaders when our training budgets are being cut?

• How can we motivate young, talented professionals to choose a career in public works?

Dr. John Luthy, nationally known public works futurist and strategist, will share ideas for:

• Leadership development and succession planning
• Accelerated recruiting
• “Making the case” to influence key decision-makers on the need for new processes, structures, and support systems

WE must take responsibility for preparing the next generation of public works professionals. Make this the legacy you leave to your community – and your profession.
Speaker: John Luthy, Ed.D.

John Luthy has enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career serving in city, county and state government as well as industry. He holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Missouri, a master’s degree in public administration from Boise State University and a doctorate from the University of Idaho, emphasizing organization development. John is a leading national authority on public sector strategic planning, leadership and organization design and development. Over the past two decades, John has served public, private business and voluntary sectors. He has assisted hundreds of organizations, including city, county and state agencies, Fortune 500 corporations and closely held businesses towards the goal of becoming more productive, cohesive and responsive. John has published numerous articles for periodicals including the APWA Reporter and is the author of the acclaimed Prepared For Challenge Organization Development Series™. He is well-known to public works audiences as a leading futurist and expert on public works strategic planning, employee performance, community and organization productivity.
