Description: Innovative Ideas for Sidewalk Management

Description: The urban forest is a vital component of every city’s infrastructure; but city sidewalks and trees have competing needs.

Protruding roots and broken pavement are not only unsightly, but hazardous to pedestrians and costly to repair. Trees are an essential component of a community’s infrastructure, as they provide environmental protection, aesthetic appeal, improve air and water quality and when properly maintained, increase property value.

George Gonzalez, Chief Forester for the City of Los Angeles, is responsible for maintaining more than 680,000 street trees and has lost an amazingly small percentage of them! He’ll share with you, his experiences in implementing new methods of cost-effective, tree-friendly strategies for sidewalk restoration.

You’ll learn:
• New and proven cost-effective ideas for saving trees and lowering sidewalk repair costs
• Improved root pruning methods to save older trees
• How to implement solutions such as rubber pavers, rambling and meandering sidewalks

When properly maintained, trees can provide shade, beauty and environmental protection. Preserve nature and promote safety.
Trees make people feel good!

He is licensed by the state of California as a Pest Control Advisor, and is a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture. He is also a Certified Urban Forester with the California Urban Forest Council.

George is currently a member of the Executive Board of the Society of Municipal Arborist, Vice-President of Street Tree Seminar Inc., and a former member of the Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (WCISA) Certification Board.
