Electric Vehicles (EVs) are about to hit the market. Coordination across stakeholders could determine whether they are successful in your area. What can you do to get ready? Broaden your understanding of plug-in readiness and hear what other communities are doing to prepare their infrastructure now.

Matt currently runs the Project Get Ready initiative to help cities prepare for electric vehicles. He combines his experience in strategic planning, new market exploration and product development with RMI's work in delivering the next generation of transportation solutions.

The Mid-America Regional council (MARC) is the Council of Governments and Metropolitan Planning Organization for the bi-state Kansas City region.

Ron Achelpohl, PE, is Assistant Director of Transportation at MARC. Ron manages a variety of initiatives related to transportation funding, operations, and management and technology in the Kansas City area including projects on traffic signals, congestion, freight, and transportation safety. He is co-chair of the Greater Kansas City Plug-In Readiness Steering Committee, which is currently developing a regional readiness plan for electric vehicles.

Jim Helmer is President of LightMoves, Ben Lomond, California; a company with a mission to assist government agencies and large corporations develop and implement sustainable transportation and outdoor lighting solutions. He is a registered Civil Engineer and a registered Traffic Engineer with the State of California and holds a certificate as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer with the Institute of Transportation Engineers.

Jim has a B.S. degree in Transportation Engineering form California Polytechnic State Universtiy and a M.S. degree in Transportation Management from the Mineta Transportation Institute. He currently teaches in the Masters of Public Administration Program at San Jose State University. Jim served 32 years in municipal transportation roles, 11 for the City of Santa Cruz, Ca. and 21 with the City of San Jose, Ca. He retired from municipal service in 2009, holding the position of Director of Transportation with the City of San Jose since 2002.

He most recently assisted in the development of model ordinance, development regulations and installation guidelines for Electric Vehicle Infrastructure for the State of Washington. These documents, just approved by Washington State in August are now available for local governments in Washington to customize to their needs. Jim also assists the Bay Area Climate Collaborative by sitting on the Electric Vehicle Subcommittee and helping to establish guidelines for Public Works officials on how to plan, design, install and maintain EV equipment.

Fleet/Facilities Manager

Howard Mann has more than 30 years of vehicle and equipment maintenance experience. He has managed the City of Leawood's Fleet Operations for the past 20 including planning and budgeting. He is the current chair for the Fleet Services Committee for the Kansas Metro Chapter.

He was a responsible for developing the Mechanic's competition event at the local chapter rodeo over 10 years ago, one of the only events of its kind. He has numerous ASE certifications including dual master certification in Automotive and Medium/Heavy Duty Truck repair and Truck Equipment Installation and Repair. He also has obtained the CEM designation from AEMP and APWA Certified Public Fleet Professional designation.

Howard was awarded the 2004 Public Works Professional Manager of the Year from the Kansas City Metro Chapter of APWA.
