Description: Today, we are in a period of our nation's history that has a drastic need for an upgrade, expansion, and rehabilitation of our roadways and infrastructures. In order to undertake the necessary tasks so these are sustainable for future generations, project coordination utilizing new technology, along with tried and true practices of working together, often in limited rights-of-way (ROW), must be undertaken.

As part of the preservation and sustainability of underground space in the ROW, there is a need for developing and maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of where utility lines are located and protecting or methodically relocating them for proposed maintenance and improvements. Some states in the USA and many more internationally have experimented with consortium mapping concepts that involve developing repositories for all utility data within a defined geographic region.

This presentation will discuss coordinating utilities using current methods as well as new research under way to develop new technologies to leverage recent advancements in data management and visualization, and communication. An overview of the technologies will be presented along with a discussion of the administrative, security and financial considerations that may result from their use. The presentation will address both project design and excavation damage prevention perspectives.

While the element of sustainability must be addressed in design stage work, it is critical that it is considered for already existing utilities in ROW.

This program will:
1. Introduce the participants to the concept of Utility Coordination during project design;
2. Describe the process of Utility Coordination during project design; and,
3. Enumerate the benefits of using and pitfalls of not using, Utility Coordination during project design.
4. Introduce the participants to new technologies being developed to enhance Utility Coordination.

After viewing this program, participants will be better able to:
* Illustrate the benefits of utility coordination
* Evaluate the advantages of utilizing new technology
* Establish best practices for improved project planning

Al Field has more than 34 years experience in utility coordination for municipal and governmental capital improvement projects, including 25 years coordinating Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) projects in both private and public sectors.

Having spent 20 years coordinating all types of governmental projects at Arizona Public Service Company (APS), Mr. Field has worked with numerous municipalities throughout Arizona to coordinate utilities for all types of governmental construction projects. Following early retirement from APS, Mr. Field held the position of utility coordination consultant for ADOT’s 136-mile Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Freeway projects for ten years.

In his current role as Senior Project Manager, Utility Coordination with engineering consulting firm Cardno TBE, Mr. Field has managed Cardno TBE’s professional Utility Coordination services on many high-profile projects such as the Valley Metro Rail Central Phoenix / East Valley Light Rail Transit Design-Build Project and the City of Phoenix Aviation Department Airport Development Program including the Sky Train people mover.

Ms. Farag is responsible for R&D program management at GTI in the areas of distribution and transmission integrity management, GPS integration, mapping, damage prevention, and automated data capture. She is responsible for program and project execution to develop, test and commercialize new technologies for the natural gas industry.

Bob has worked for the City of Lee’s Summit Missouri for eight years. He started out as a water system operator then six years ago became a Right-of-Way inspector.

Along with other job duties, he schedules utility coordination meetings with various utilities to discuss possible conflicts with city projects and to get the effected utilities relocated in a timely manner
