Speaker: Bret Hodne

Superintendent of Public Works
City of West Des Moines, IA

Bret has been with the City of West Des Moines Public Works Department since 1989. He started his career as an equipment operator for the City before moving into his current position as Public Work Superintendent.

Bret has served as the American Public Works Association Iowa Chapter President and is currently the Iowa Chapter Delegate for the National APWA. For the past several years, Bret chaired the APWA Winter Maintenance Sub-Committee before recently turning the reigns over to Mark DeVries. Bret was recognized in 2007 by the APWA as one of the Top Ten Public Works Leaders in North America.

During the past few years, Bret has conducted several presentations in both the United States and internationally on maintenance related issues and written several articles that have been featured in various publications.

Street Superintendent
City of Fort Collins, CO

Larry Schneider is the City of Fort Collins Streets Superintendent. He decided to become a Public Works Professional 28 years ago so that he could inspire, coach employees and make a difference to the Fort Collins community, following his mentor's lead of fostering his love and knowledge of great customer service.

Larry Schneider is a past president of the APWA Colorado Chapter, and was the 1995 recipient of the William J. Korbitz Colorado Public Works Leader of the Year award. The board of the Colorado APWA chapter nominates their favorite leader for the award, and of all of his twenty different awards this one is kept in a very special place-his heart. Larry currently serves on the North American Snow Conference Winter Maintenance committee. Larry also started the APWA Western Snow & Ice Conference, which he currently chairs as the conference enters its 28th year.

Larry is also a loving family man and lives in Fort Collins, Colorado with his wife Barbara and two of his school-age children. Larry has a total of eight children and seven grandkids. When not working, he loves coaching youth football, basketball and watching his daughter play rugby.

Alexandria, VA

Dick Hanneman is President of the Salt Institute, the Alexandria, Virginia-based international trade association representing companies producing salt throughout North America and the world. The Institute advocates salt industry policy on such issues as highway traffic safety, human health and nutrition, and worker safety.

In the transportation area, Dick represents the salt industry on the Board of Directors of the American Highway Users Alliance and on the Advisory Council of the Roadway Safety Foundation. He is a member of the Transportation Research Board’s Winter Maintenance Committee, Technology Transfer Committee and Corrosion Committee and served on the National Academy of Sciences’ Strategic Highway Research Program Highway Operations Advisory Committee. He also serves on the Transportation Association of Canada’s Maintenance and Construction Committee, its Environment Council and on the TAC committee that produced a Salt Management Guide and its Syntheses of Best Management Practices. His leadership helped forge a partnership between the Salt Institute and the National LTAP Association to promote improved winter maintenance training.

Supervisor, Technical Operations
Transportation Operations
Region of Waterloo, ON

Emil Marion is the Supervisor, Technical Operations, of the Region of Waterloo, Ontario and has been employed with the Region since 1988. He has held a technical position within Transportation Operations, as well as Roads Supervisor for the Region’s Central Yard.

Currently, Emil is president of the Waterloo Regional Public Works Association which is affiliated with the Ontario Association of Road Supervisors (AORS) and is a member of the Ontario Road Salt Management Group (ORSMG).

Since 2004, Emil has been involved with both the design and construction aspects of a new salt storage / truck wash facility located at its main Operations Center utilizing best salt management practices developed by the Ministry of the Environment. Beginning operation in the fall of 2007, this facility includes a recycling system that uses washwater for both washbay and brine making processes and collects rain and snow melt from the roofs of the buildings into a cistern to be used in the washwater system. All processes are contained under the roof of the structure where an underground rubber membrane is in place to minimize ground contamination.
An external conveyor used to load material into the building is designed to contain material in one area while eliminating the need for trucks backing up to dump.
