Description: The second broadcast in the Pavement series overviews maintenance and preservation techniques to help you maintain and preserve your black and white pavements. Speakers address options for maintaining asphalt using crack, fog, slurry and chip seal; microsurfacing, asphalt overlay; and hot and cold in place recycling techniques. Cement maintenance options include joint sealing, diamond grinding, dowel bar retrofit and partial and full depth repair.

After participating in this program you will be able to:
• Identify and compare hot mix asphalt pavement maintenance options.
• Identify and compare Portland cement concrete pavement maintenance options.

David Hein is a Principal Engineer and Vice-President of Transportation of Applied Research Associates, Inc in Toronto, Canada. He is responsible for the day-to-day operation of 5 ARA offices in Canada and the United States. He is a graduate of the University of Waterloo in Civil Engineering and has over 23 years of experience in the design, evaluation and management of pavements. He is the Canadian technical member of the PIARC International Roads Committee and past Chair of the Transportation Association of Canada Pavements Standing Committee.

Mr. Hein has authored/co-authored over 35 technical papers on transportation asset management, pavement design and evaluation for international technical conferences and journals. Mr. Hein has completed over 100 technical presentations at conferences and committee meetings and has led training courses for over 500 individuals over the past 20 years.

Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc.

Mr. Daring has 28 years of experience in pavement management, pavement engineering, and pavement materials design and testing. His career has included experience at the State DOT, regional, and local levels. He has been a frequent presenter at Technology Transfer Center and APWA seminars focused on pavement related subjects. Currently, he leads a specialized team of pavement management and engineering professionals for an East Coast consulting firm. He also currently serves as a member of the APWA Engineering & Technology committee.

Director
Tennessee Public Works Institute (TPWI) and Administrator of the Tennessee Chapter of the American Public Works Association.

He serves as the Tennessee Region Consultant for Pavement Technology, Inc. He retired as Public Works Division Manager from the City of Oak Ridge in 2003 after 28 years of service. Mr. Calvert has taught courses on Pavement Maintenance and has been a frequent speaker at APWA national and state conferences. He has assisted the Utah LTAP with classes at the annual Utah Asphalt Conference and the annual Utah Road School. He teaches pavement maintenance and other subjects at TPWI. He has published numerous papers and articles on pavement maintenance and pavement preservation. Mr. Calvert is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University (1973).

Bill has been with Unique Paving Materials for 18 years and in that time has worked in several different capacities:

• 10 years in Direct Sales
• 2 years in Sales Management
• 5 years as Technical Manager
• Recently promoted to Technical Products Manager

He has an extensive background in quality control and quality assurance as well as product development, evaluations, testing and obtaining DOT approvals. As Unique’s Technical Products Manager he is heavily involved with bringing new products to market currently focusing on the green initiative.

Bill is a current member of Northern Ohio Service Directors Association and has been a member of APWA and ASTM.
