Description: Road Safety AIMED at Public Works Directors, Traffic Engineers, City Managers, ITS Professionals, Transit System Operators and Managers. The new SAFETEA-LU legislation emphasizes safety on our state highways, but the fact remains that the greatest number of fatalities occurs daily on our local roads. What can you do in your community to save time, money—and most importantly—lives? This 3-part “Target” series will address important safety issues including: Accident analysis and costing, low-cost safety improvement ideas, traffic management…and more!

TARGET Road Safety 1: Are Your Community’s Roadways Accident-Prone? — Assess the Current Safety Conditions

Are your community’s roadways an “accident waiting to happen?” Don’t wait until it’s too late to make your streets and roads safer for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists. This session is essential for diagnosing accidents and monitoring road safety efforts.

You’ll learn how to:

-Plan for future safety conditions
-Detect problems and assess repair costs

Speaker: John Campbell, E.I.T.

Traffic Specialist, Ayres Associates Inc., Waukesha, Wisconsin

As a traffic specialist for Ayres Associates Inc., Mr. Campbell’s primary responsibilities involve assisting in traffic engineering and roadway design tasks. More specifically, he analyzes crashes, designs/optimizes signal systems, and models traffic. He focuses on the safe and efficient movement of traffic and is aware of the latest techniques for designing pedestrian, bicycle, and railway crossings.

Mr. Campbell’s education background includes an emphasis in transportation engineering, crash analysis, and the identification and prioritization of hazardous locations. He has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI.

Training and Research Manager, Idaho Local Technical Assistance Program, University of Idaho

Bruce Drewes has been providing educational programs to the local agencies around Idaho, through the University of Idaho’s Local Technical Assistance Program for the past six years. He has delivered educational programs on Road Safety Audits for Local Governments, Road Safety Fundamentals, Retro reflectivity for Signs, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Pavement Maintenance, Work Zone Traffic Control, and more. Prior to coming to the Idaho LTAP, Bruce worked with the Idaho Transportation Department in Maintenance and Construction for 18 years.
