Leadership 101:  Learning by Doing or "A Year in the Life of an Emerging Leader"

APWA instituted the Emerging Leader Academy in 2008 and the Class of '08 completed their work and received their Certificates at the Awards Ceremony at the Annual APWA Congress and Exposition in New Orleans in August.  The sixteen candidates began a year-long journey in leadership training knowing only that they were expected to participate in a weekend Retreat, develop a Class project, study leadership and management issues, and prepare themselves to grow as leaders.    The end result far exceeded the expectations of the APWA Leadership and Management Committee who developed the program.

Four of the members of the Class of '08 will share their not only what they learned but how they feel they grew and their leadership skills developed as a result of the program.  Equally as exciting will be the discussion of the two brochures, the classroom presentation, logo development, and other creative artwork the class members developed to leave as a legacy to introduce public works to future generations and to encourage career development for young adults.

This hour and a half presentation will make a great discussion starter for career development discussions within your own departments.  Bring a group of staffers together to listen to the presentation and then have an open forum to see how your staff can develop something on the local level.
