A welcome message from Walter Veselka, Facillities and Grounds Committee Chair, 2010-2011
Welcome to the APWA Facilities and Grounds Committee web page. The committee's objective is to serve as an information link and to facilitate the sharing of knowledge, experience and expertise regarding buildings, facilities, parks, urban forestry and other public lands between our APWA colleagues. The committee wants to work with the membership to build a closer relationship with the Center for Sustainability and would like to highlight our ties to the other Technical Committees as well as Standing Committees.
For 2010-11 the Facilities and Grounds Committee is committed to achieving superior performance in areas identified in our GAP analysis including:
- Seeking bold and innovative thinking in facilities and grounds management and highlighting these to the membership.
- Strongly emphasizing sustainable aspects of facilities and grounds. Highlighting new renovation and system replacement designs, maintenance practices and operational parameters.
- Improving educational and outreach opportunities with the members.
- Building a stronger relationship between the committee and APWA chapters. We are investigating moving our spring meeting to southern California.
- Actively seeking information from APWA members on "Best Practices" in our area of facilities and grounds using infoNOW, We Are Public Works and other survey tools with a goal of spreading this information in future articles and presentations.
- Reviewing other professional organizations having similar audiences. Identifying at least one in which we might be successful in nurturing a partnership of sharing.
- Continuing our work toward publishing a pocket guide on urban forestry, anticipated for 2011-12 release.
Please review our Business Plan including Strategies for 2010-2011. If you have any thoughts on articles of interest for the Reporter, educational sessions for the APWA Congress or other ideas or suggestions, please contact APWA or one of the committee members. Finally, please review the Opportunities to Participate, Meeting Summaries and Newsletters links for more information about APWA and our committee.
