On May 21, 2003, Public Works celebrated National Public Works Week by hosting a Public Works Fair to show off the various divisions within the department. The Fair included educational booths and a variety of equipment used within the Department. Divisions and Programs represented at the Fair included Engineering, Fleet, Parks, Trees & Medians, Storm Water Protection, Streets, Water Conservation and Water & Sewer Operations.

Visitors had the opportunity to see and learn about the variety of Public Works activities that take place on a daily basis. Each department had staff available to answer questions and explain his or her role to visitors. Activities at the Fair ranged from watershed model presentations to traffic signal and sewer line video demonstrations. There were handouts at each table including stickers, pens and pencils, coloring books and construction hats.

The fair was a complete success! Nearly 500 Carlsbad residents, library patrons, City employees and school children from Carlsbad Unified School District attended the Fair. The City received many positive comments about the displays, vehicle demonstrations, and of course, the giveaways!

In a competition between departments, Parks, Trees & Medians was voted "Best of Show" by fair attendees. Congratulations on a job well done!

The City of Richmond recognized National Public Works Week by handing out prizes to our public works, engineering and parks staff. These prizes were generously donated by local businesses, in appreciation of the high quality and professional work that our staff does on a daily basis.

A special highlight of the week was the awarding of the first ever "Public Works" scholarship, which was jointly sponsored by the City of Richmond and CUPE 394. This scholarship was handed out to a Richmond student graduating and entering into the field of public works. The scholarship was presented to the student by Mayor Malcolm Brodie, the General Manager of Engineering & Public Works Jeff Day, and the President of CUPE 394 Doug Anderson.

To quote the student awarded the scholarship "...it was a great privilege and an honour to be chosen as the winner of the inaugural City of Richmond Public Works Scholarship, the presentation of the scholarship at the public works yard and again, at the valedictory is a thrill that I will never forget.."

The Engineering & Public Works Division are very proud of the establishment of this scholarship, we hope that it will encourage others to enter into this very rewarding and worthwhile field of work, which benefits the City and its residents. The week was a great success, and we look forward to doing it again next year.

Village of Waterville, Ohio

The village of Waterville hosted its eighth annual Public Works Open House on May 23 amid perfect spring weather and with the smell of mouth-watering barbeque filling the air.

Local residents had the opportunity to dine with neighbors and village officials while participating in equipment demonstrations and trying their luck at free raffles sponsored by the Waterville Public Works Department, Waterville Fire Department and Waterville Gas and Oil Company.

Roughly 120 third grade students from Waterville Primary School attended the day's festivities, which took place at the public works building at 1215 Waterville-Monclova Rd. The students enjoyed free food and provided a captive audience as the fire department demonstrated departmental equipment and explained fire hydrant awareness.

Equipment of all sizes was on display for public view, including backhoes, dump trucks, mowing machinery and the department's new John Deere 5510 tractor.

Waterville official Dale Knepper, strolling the open house and greeting citizens from across the county, was one of many people excited to be part of the annual event.

"It's a great service for the community," Knepper said “When the kids come out, everyone has a great time with the fire department. It gets a little crazy, but it's a fun day for everybody."

Before hitting the open house, the students filed into Waterville’s municipal building for a mock village council meeting. In preparation for the event, the third graders created their own reports and elected a council president.

Public works staff members are pleased with local response to the annual open house and hope to continue its successful \ mix of fun, good food and safety services far into the future.
