An important role for APWA is to formulate position statements, and resolutions that influence the framework within which public works professionals do their jobs.
APWA takes a member-based approach to advocacy, to ensure that federal policy is created with the input and perspective of local public works officials. Each year, the Government Affairs Committee sets forth Public Policy Advocacy Priorities that guide advocacy efforts and are implemented by the Government Affairs Office in Washington, D.C.
Various types of APWA positions are developed by Technical Committees, reviewed by staff, and approved by the APWA Board of Directors. In the case of Advocacy positions, the Government Affairs Committee also reviews the positions.
APWA members are encouraged to submit ideas for new positions or amendments to existing positions. Members can also help to make sure APWA positions are heard and considered by Members of Congress by clicking the "Get Involved" link.
