At its May 15, 2006 meeting City Council proclaimed May 21 through 27 National Public Works Week. A column explaining
the roles of Public Service employees appeared in a local newspaper on May 17. The City also produced a poster featuring
many of our employees and using the theme "Public Works: The Heart of Every Community." The posters were displayed in
City buildings. A reception for employees was held May 22 at which employees received recognition plaques for 5 years,
10 years, and 15 years of service.

Public Works Expo
This event featured fun activities for the whole family. "A Walk Through Public Works" familiarized citizens
with the benefits of projects and the involvement of public works staff at each step of the Depot Park Stormwater
Facility project. Information was available on refuse collection and recycling services, transportation services,
traffic engineering, mosquito control, and stormwater management. Children enjoyed the hands-on activities.

The Economy Borough Road Department celebrated National Public Works Week by having children from the Art Clubs
from Economy Elementary School and Baden Economy Jr. High School paint trash cans for the parks with a 'Do Not Litter" theme.
We then traveled to the Economy Elementary School for a "Heavy Equipment Show and Tell Program". Earl Fitzgerald, department
supervisor and President of the Western PA Chapter APWA, gave the children a short safety presentation on work zone safety.
One grade at a time, a volunteer was picked and given a hard hat, safety vest and Stop and Slow paddle. The children were then
shown Work Area Ahead signs and asked if they new what they were for. Approximately 425 students, grades K-4, were very
attentive and responded with youthful enthusiasm. By the end, with the help of our miniature Flaggers they all new to tell
their parents to drive slow thru Work Zones. We then led the children outside where our Road Grader, Front End Loader,
Backhoe/Loader, Street Sweeper and Peterbilt truck awaited them. An employee was posted with each piece of equipment.
They each gave a short description of the piece of equipment they were posted by and what they are used for. I think the
Road employees had as much fun as the children.
"Thank you children for brightening our day."

The City of Victorville honored its dedicated Public Works professionals for the outstanding work they do by hosting a
fun-filled, 5th Annual Public Works Day event. Employees proudly wore matching T-shirts with the 2006 theme, "The
Heart of Every Community," as they shared with residents what they do in their jobs every day to enhance the community.
Besides the added attractions of bounce houses, pony rides, raffle prizes and free bar-be-queue fare, residents-young and
old alike-were fascinated to learn about the large displays of equipment and vehicles and how they are used in the daily
maintenance operations of the city. Children especially enjoyed the many hands-on activities, including climbing into the
backhoe for a shot at using the control levers to maneuver colorful balls into a bucket. By the end of the day, everyone
was pleased to learn about what public works does for the community-while having fun at the same time!

We held our first open house in 2006, and invited elected officials, the general public, and school
children. We had over 100 people in attendance. We provided tours of the Household Chemical Waste
Collection facility, Fleet Management, and Transportation. We had several displays including posters
showing various projects, a work zone safety display, demonstrations of how we make road signs, and
a hands-on demonstration of an Enviroscape model that demonstrates sources of water pollution. We
had several different types of equipment set up in the parking lot where visitors could climb aboard,
and ask drivers what the equipment is used for. We provided a "covered wagon" ride around the
transportation yard where visitors learned about recycled road materials, saw the salt/sand building,
and had a first-hand view of many of the things public works professionals are responsible for. We
also had GIS displays, and two of our CAD technicians provided live demonstrations of the work they
do. We had activity books for the children, and gave out goodie bags with pencils and rulers made from
recyclable materials, brochures, and county maps. Every visitor was given a safety vest to wear, just
like the vests we give our Adopt-A-Road volunteers. It was a great first Public Works Day, and we're
looking forward to our open house this May.

The City of Santa Barbara traditionally celebrates National Public Works Week with a Public Works-wide
BBQ for all City Public Works employees. The BBQ lunch activities include music, a raffle and good eats,
all designed to say "Thanks" to our public works employees and to acknowledge all that they do for the
Santa Barbara community.
The BBQ is held in our Streets Maintenance area. Staff arrange displays with the highlights of the
Department's most recent accomplishments over the past year. Specialized and newly purchased equipment
is on display for viewing. The BBQ is well attended and enjoyed by all!
