The City of Pittsburg celebrated National Public Works Weeks on May 20th, 2004 with an Open House / Appreciation Day at its
Corporation Yard. This year's theme, "Focused on our Community - 24/7" was shared with the community on all outreach materials
to draw attention to all the services Public Works provides on a 24/7 basis seamlessly behind the scenes. The City Council
recognized these dedicated services with a Proclamation.
Each Division of the Public Works Department created displays with facts, equipment, and demonstrations about their
Division's responsibility within the community. A few examples of what the community was able to learn: how water
distribution and treatment worked; how graffiti is removed and abated; how a sewer line is checked and cleaned; and
how traffic signals operate. There was a barbeque along with handouts, coloring books and crayons, stickers, popcorn,
recycled pencils, and orange cone hats. In addition, there were two mascots, Mr. Cone Man and Water Drop, to interact
with the community and get the message out.
To share in this Appreciation Day, Public Works invited schools, the community, career counselors from the local
high school and community college, City staff, and City Council to the Open House. A total of four schools and
approximately 385 students, teachers and parents from Pittsburg Unified School District attended the event. The
classrooms visited each station listening and asking questions about the work staff did within the community. The
students, teachers and parents were impressed with the displays and all the work performed by Public Works. In addition,
approximately 50 people from the community attended and had positive comments about the event and our staff. All Public
Works staff did an amazing job creating their exhibits and sharing about their role within the community!

The City of Lethbridge celebrated National Public Works Week with a number of activities to mark the event. The primary focus was
on employee and public safety.
A video was prepared that aired on Global television in 40 time slots during National Public Works Week. The theme of the message
was "We don't drive through your work place - please don't drive through ours." The video depicts an office setting with several
pieces of public works equipment driving through and disrupting the office. There is then a collage of work sites and the video
ends with a scene of a barricaded site with the public driving safely around the barricadeds.
In addition, an audio advertisement that paralleled the video was aired some twenty-six times on each of four local radio stations
throughout the week.
An interviewwith the Public Operations Manager was featured on Global's noon-hour show. (6MB file, Windows Media format - to download:
right click this link and choose "Save Target As...")
The "Stay Safe - Stay Away" video was shown to some 1,500 students at ten
elementary schools in Lethbridge (grades K - 6).
Three City of Lethbridge Public Works employees presented the video with an interactive colouring/workbook and demonstrated
work site safety equipment along with personal protective equipment. The video depicts real and hidden dangers of construction
sites as playgrounds.
A final function was a BBQ at the Public Operations yards. All City of Lethbrige staff, city council and local politicians were
invited. The BBQ included an equipment road-eo elimination for the CPWA/APWA Alberta Chapter equipment road-eo to be held in Red
Deer in September. City Council sponsored part of the BBQ.

INDIANAPOLIS (May 17, 2004) - Mayor Bart Peterson, Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Jim Garrard, and AFSCME Local
725 President Steve Quick opened ceremonies marking National Public Works Week on Monument Circle today.
Mayor Peterson proclaimed May 16 -22 "National Public Works Week" in Indianapolis and kicked off DPW's annual Employee
Olympics. Nine teams of employees participated in various games on the Circle, including a construction cone relay race
and, in keeping with the theme of one of the core services DPW provides, a trash bag toss competition.
"Public Works Week provides a great opportunity for us to recognize the dedicated people of DPW and to thank them for
providing the services that improve our quality of life," said Jim Garrard, DPW Director. "Events like this also give
the community an opportunity to learn about and appreciate the services DPW provides."
In addition to the Employee Olympics, Public Works employees displayed air and water quality monitoring equipment
and hosted a vehicle showcase including snow plows, paintliners, a vacuum truck, and a lightning loader, which is
used for picking up debris such as heavy trash.
During this week, DPW employees will visit seven area elementary schools and make presentations to more than 1,600

This year, APWA National Public Works Week was celebrated on May 22, 2004 from 10AM to 2PM on the City Hall grounds in Palm Bay,
Florida in a big way. This event is fast becoming a tradition in our rapidly growing community of over 90,000 people, located
on the east coast of Central Florida.
The event included activities for kids of all ages (and the adults too), educational demonstrations, live entertainment,
informational booths, and free food and refreshments supplied by local vendors and co-sponsors throughout the community.
Representation from all sections of our department participated in the planning and implementation of the fair-like event.
Literally hundreds of children visited the heavy equipment demonstrations, participated in the "paint your own truck" contest,
lurked about with the scavenger hunt with our survey crews, and viewed the numerous educational and informational displays.
Of the interactive activities, you could make your own personalized street sign, get your "Future Heavy Equipment Operator"
photo license, or get your hands on training on a hydraulic excavator.
One of the highlights was the Bayside High School Jazz Ensemble, who performed brilliantly while the community came out for
this fun event.
This year's theme, "24/7: Focused on Our Community", centered on our community and on the public works staff who are always
there and always ready.
National Public Works Week promotes a community's awareness that public works is vital to the growth and quality of life in
any community. By your promotion of Public Works Week other government officials, business leaders, and citizens can learn
the importance of public works and the positive impact it has on each person's life.
In the City of Palm Bay we received the support of our community, the business sponsors, and most importantly the Mayor and
City Council who supported this event and our efforts as a department, making this event an overwhelming success and showing
that Palm Bay is a "Perfect Place to Grow."

City of Fresno, California

Located in the geographic center of California, the City of Fresno went all-out at its celebration of Public Works Week this past
May. With a growing population exceeding 450,000 Fresno is California's 6th largest City and fast approaching 5th largest status.
So leading-edge service excellence is required by its citizens from the City's public works staff to keep pace with the
ever-escalating demands of a vibrant community. This year's Public Works Week celebration focused on informing the residents of
Fresno about the City's diverse activities to serve the community's needs but also honored and recognized the dedicated City
staff who make it all happen every day.
Fresno's General Services, Public Works and Public Utilities Departments partnered to celebrate this nationwide recognition
of the important role public works plays in communities everywhere. On Tuesday, May 18, 2004, Mayor Alan Autry & the Fresno
City Council proclaimed the week of May 16-22 as "NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS WEEK" in the City of Fresno, California. A public
proclamation was read at the Council meeting and expressions of appreciation were voiced by the elected officials highly
commending City staff for their significant contributions to Fresno's positive community environment and infrastructure.
They called upon all citizens and civic organizations in Fresno to recognize the contributions which the Public Works,
General Services and Public Utilities Departments make every day to the health, safety, comfort, and quality of life of the
community's residents.
After the proclamation was presented to the Public Works, General Services and Public Utilities Directors at the day's
scheduled Council meeting, a public outreach event was held on the grounds and in the street in front of City Hall. Staff
from divisions representing each of the departments manned thirteen different information tables to illustrate displays and
information about the work they do for the City and explained to interested citizens and other City staff the services they
provide as well as their program's mission. The street in front of City Hall was closed to through-traffic to accommodate a
huge showcase of diverse City vehicles & equipment and vendor displays. The City's "Clean Air" fleet of natural gas & hybrid
vehicles was well represented along with refuse trucks, tractors, and specialty equipment like a Sewer Maintenance camera truck.
The National Public Works Week celebration at City Hall was well attended by Fresno citizens, City staff, school groups and local
media featured the event on the TV nightly news.
The second leg of Fresno's two-pronged Public Works Week celebration was focused on staff recognition and appreciation. On
Friday, May 21, 2004, the three departments (General Services, Public Utilities & Public Works) again partnered to further
celebrate the Week by providing a BBQ to honor staff for their delivery of outstanding public works service each and every
day to the citizens of the City of Fresno. The staff celebration was held at the City's Municipal Service Center with over
500 staff in attendance. Supervisors and management from the three departments served BBQ tri-tip beef with all the fixings
to an appreciative team of dedicated staff members.
The City Manager & Directors from each of the three participating Departments expressed personal appreciation for their
committed staff & the critical work they perform each day to enable the City to function as the culture of excellence Fresno
citizens expect & deserve. Tickets were provided to each staff member for raffle drawings for prizes which were provided by
appreciative local vendors. The staff present enjoyed a great time together in celebrating National Public Works Week, in a
manner never before done in Fresno. Several staff members expressed how positive the event was and how much they personally
enjoyed the recognition for the outstanding public service they provide every day.
An added benefit of the event was that it brought together staff from three different City of Fresno departments who deliver
public works services and provided an opportunity for team building and comradery. Staff team members from the General Services
Department provide Fleet Management, Facilities Management, Communications Services, Central Printing and Purchasing services to
all City customer departments. The Public Utilities Department team provides key City services such as Sewer Maintenance, Solid
Waste Management, Community Sanitation, Wastewater Management and Water Production & Distribution. Fresno's Public Works
Department team provides Engineering Services, Traffic Operations, Capital Management, Construction Management and Streets
Maintenance services. The gathering of over 500 staff members from these three departments to recognize their contribution
to the City of Fresno as public works professionals was an exhilarating experience never before experienced by all present.
Fresno's celebration of National Public Works Week with two separate events and melding staff from three different departments
who deliver public works services was highly successful and well received. Positive feedback was heard over & over from the
public & City staff who participated. We look forward to making next year's event even bigger and better with possible additions
of hands-on demonstrations for the public and site tours.
